RAMAYANA 1

RAMAYANA 1

1. Lahirnya Rahwana

Ia bernama Sarpakenaka. Sedangkan Wibisana, sang putera bungsu berwajah satria dan  pula amat bijaksana.

Rahwana mewarisi takhta  kerajaan. Ia menaklukkan negeri-negeri lain termasuk Lokapala. Bahkan Kahyangan hendak pula ditaklukkannya. Batara Wisnu berniat hendak memberantas kezaliman Rahwana. Maka menjelmalah ia pada seorang pangeran Negeri Ayodya, Sang Ramawijaya.

1. The Birth of Rahwana

Once upon a time, there was a king named Danaraja who ruled Lokapala. He wanted to marry a princess of Langkapura, Dewi Sukesi. To marry that princess, he needed to win a competition. Because of that, the King Danaraja asked his father, Bagawan Wisrawa, to represent him in the competition. Bagawan Wisrawa left for Langkapura.

Having supernatural power, Bagawan Wisrawa won the competition easily. Seeing how beautiful Dewi Sukesi was, he changed his mind. He himself wanted to marry her and forgot that actually it was his son who wanted to marry this princess. Then Bagawan Wisrawa married Dewi Sukesi.

From this union some children were born. The first was Rahwana or Dasamuka. He had a strong body and a giant's face. His personality was bad too. The second child was Kumbakarna, who also had a giant face but with good personality. The third child was a girl with a giant face, Sarpakenaka was her name. She also had bad personality. The last child was Wibisana who had nice personality and handsome.

Rahwana succedded his father as a king. He conquered other kingdoms including Lokapala. He also wanted to conquered Heaven. The God Wisnu wanted to stop Rahwana's atrocities. He reincarnated becoming a prince of Ayodya, Ramawijaya.

Sumali (Malay: Sumaliwan, Tamil: Chumali) is the grandfather of Ravana, the principal antagonist of the Ramayana.

He, his elder brother Malyavan and younger brother Mali were the sons of the daitya Sukesh.

Sumali along with his two brothers made a tapasya to Brahma and asked that their brotherly love would be unbreakable and no one would be able to defeat them. Consequently they conquered every god and Daitya. With these powers they asked Vishvakarma to make a city for them. Thus they received Lanka where they lived in luxury. Later they were defeated by the gods and Mali was killed by Vishnu.

Sumali's wife was Ketumati with which he had ten sons - Prahastra, Akampana, Vikata, Kalikamuka, Dumraksha, Dandha, Suparshva, Sanhadi, Barkarna and four daughters - Raka, Pushpotyata, Kaikasi, and Kumbhinasi. Thataka, a Yaksha princhess, is also named as his wife. She bore Sumali two sons, Subahu and Maricha, and a daughter, Kaikesi. Kaikesi was married to sage Vishrava and their son Ravana reconqured Lanka.
